Oxy-Pool For Removal of Algae in Pools

One of the major problems in pools is the occurrence of algae, either during the winter months when the pool is not in use or if the pool is left for a few days without treatment during the swimming season.

Oxy-Pool (sodium percarbonate is the main ingredient) at a concentration of 80-100 ppm (About one pound per 1000 gallons of water) achieves good clarification of algae infested water (which often appears as a whitish haze).

When added to water, Oxy-Pool immediately disassociates to natural soda ash (essentially inert except for slightly increasing the pH of the water) and hydrogen peroxide which oxidizes algae and other organic matter.

Oxy-Pool can be used in all types of pools, but is ideally suited for vinyl lined pools and will not attack or bleach out the lining’s color. (Chlorine releasing compounds tend to discolor and deteriorate vinyl liners over time.)

Oxy-Pool is compatible with the more expensive Quat algaecides, and can be economically used to pretreat an algae infested pool 2-3 days prior to the use of normal treatment methods.

Oxy-Pool as an Organic Contaminant Oxidizer (Pool Shock)

Pool contaminants can be introduced from a variety of sources. These are generally recognized as bather wastes like urine, perspiration, cosmetic products, sunscreens and lotions. But they also include organic contaminants that can be introduced through wind and rain, such as dust, pollen, insects, leaves, plant and grass debris and airborne pollutants.

To help keep pools clear and free of organic contaminants chlorine releasing additives are quite often used. However, as contaminants build up in the pool water, they combine with chlorine as part of the oxidation process to produce chloramide compounds, which can lead to a foul smell as well as cloudy and dull appearing water.

Oxy-Pool overcomes this problem as it uses oxygen instead of chlorine bleach. The advantage to oxidation without chlorine is that there is no added production of chloramides and if a non-chlorine releasing agent is being used sanitizing efficiency is increased without raising the chlorine level.

Regular preventive use with Oxy-Pool, will give you better water quality, longer periods of uninterrupted swim time, less eye and skin irritation and a more manageable maintenance schedule.

Oxy-Pool provides over three times the available oxygen than the most widely used non-chlorine products like potassium monopersulfate, which is sold at a similar price.

Oxy-Pool as a Control for High Chlorine Levels

In pools that use chlorine releasing additives bathers breathe small amounts of chlorine gas and also absorb chlorine through the skin. In fact, a 2003 study published in Occupational and Environmental Medicine links regular swimming in chlorinated pools to asthma in children. Chlorine is a skin irritant, which is a problem especially for those with allergies and skin sensitivities as well as the general public.

Oxy-Pool is effective in reducing levels of chlorine in pools. At a level of 5-6 ounces per 10,000 gallons of pool water it will remove 0.2-0.5 ppm of free chlorine.

Oxy-Pool as a Pool Winterizer

Oxy-Pool is recommended for use prior to closing the pool for a long lasting effect during winter months when the pool is not in use. Recommended use levels are 3-4 times the normal use level for algae removal. It can also be used to stabilize a pool when not in use for several days.

Directions for use of Oxy-Pool For Removal of Algae

- Skim pool of all floating matter and debris.
- Start pool pump; check pH and adjust to 7.0 to 7.6.
- Allow pump to run for 15-30 minutes.
- Add up to one pound of Oxy-Pool per 1000 gallons of water by spreading around the pool. Water will foam and bubble as the Oxy-Pool is dissolving. Algae and other debris will lift to the surface; skim as necessary. (For long term pool protection as in winterizing, add 3-4 pounds per 1000 gallons of water.)
- Wait 30 minutes and check pH; Adjust pH back to 7.0-7.6 if necessary.
- Allow pump to run for up to 24 hours; backflush pump at least once during this period.
- Check pH again and adjust if necessary.
- Run pump for another 24 hour period, backflushing as necessary.
- Vacuum pool bottom and walls to remove last traces of algae.
- Add normal pool chemicals and follow use instructions.

Direction for use of Oxy-Pool as a Pool Shock or for Free Chlorine Reduction

Follow the above instructions 1-7 but use only 4-5 ounces of Oxy-Pool per 10,000 gallons of pool water as a pool shock to reduce organic contaminants or 5-6 ounces for effective free chlorine reduction.

Oxy-Pool Use In Spas

It is generally recommended to oxidize any organic contaminants present after spa use. Recommended dosage of Oxy-Pool in spas is one ounce per 250 gallons of water.

Other Oxy-Pool Uses

Oxy-Pool is an effective cleaner on outdoor surfaces around the pool and spa:

-Cleans, brightens and removes organic matter (like algae and mildew) from deck and concrete areas.

-Removes stains from lounges and chairs.

-It is safe to use on all fabrics and upholstery.

-Soak cleaner/deodorizer for pool toys, goggles and garbage cans.

Directions:

Prepare cleaning solution by dissolving four to six ounces of Oxy-Pool per gallon of hot water.

Allow 5-10 minutes for Oxy-Pool to dissolve and become cleaning active.

Apply “cleaning active” solution to surface with a mop, roller, sponge or rag. A pump sprayer or spray bottle is good for applying solution to railings or other vertical surfaces.

Wait 10 –15 minutes after application then scrub with stiff bristle brush or broom.

Rinse well with water.

Repeat as necessary. Solution will remain “cleaning active” for up to 8 hours but will be most effective when used soon after mixing.

For soaking dissolve 2-4 ounces of Oxy-Pool per gallon of hot water. Soak article to be cleaned to soak for several hours. After soaking then rinse.

Note: Do not store in a sealed container as the cleaning active” solution will give off oxygen and may cause the container to leak.
